History of PMRI and PISA in Indonesia

1994 PMRI initiated

In 1994, prof Sembiring (jurusan Matematika ITB) met Jan de Lange-as keynote speaker in the ICMI Conference in Shanghai. He invited JdL to help reform math education in Indonesia. PMRI or RME was first brought by a Dutch team led by Jan de Lange in 1998. He suggested to the Ministry of Education via Driven Satrio  that mathematics education be reformed by sending lecturers to learn RME through a PhD program at the Freudenthal Institute, Utrecht University.

In 1998, 6 PhD students were selected by Dutch & Indonesia team and sent to the Netherlands using the PGSM Scholarship. After four years, in 2002, four PhD were successful, including Sutarto(ULM); Ahmad Fauzan(UNP), Dian Armanto (Unimed) and Zulkardi from UNSRI.

In 2000, Jan de Lange also introduced PISA  when he was a keynote speaker at the National Conference on Math at ITB. PISA was then developed and continued by Zulkardi at UNSRI, eventually becoming a renowned research field and a prominent competition in Indonesia. The new direction of research was to create PISA-type mathematics questions.  The main goal is to facilitate Indonesian students’ learning of PISA mathematics questions. This effort is significant considering that the OECD releases very few PISA questions on the Internet. 

Since 2006, the Do-PMRI or Dissemination of PMRI project has been managed by  Kees Hoogland, Maarten Dolk,  and Prof. Sembiring.  Zulkardi managed  the website and its content called P4MRI, or the PMRI Development and Research Center, with its operations centered at UNSRI. 

2010 PMRI continue

After project was finished.  PMRI was continued to be extended by opening the International Master on Math Education (IMPOME) in collaboration among Unsri, Unesa, and Utrecht University from 2010 to 2015. About 50 master’s degrees in RME or PI were produced in five years. The program, a year in Indonesia funded by Dikti and a year sponsored by Neso Nuffic.

Presented at ICME13 Hamburg.

Tim PMRI Unsri diundang khusus oleh panitia ICME13 di Hamburg untuk menampilkan perkembangan RME di Indonesia. Acaranya digabung dengan tim beberapa negara yang mengembangkan RME seperti USA, Inggris dan Afrika Selatan. Berikut informasi saat acara Thematics Afternoon dimana Tim PMRI Unsri-Zulkardi dan Ratu Ima tampil di depan ratusan peserta ICME13 Hamburg Tahun 2016 bercerita tentang Perkembangan PMRI setelah 20 Tahun di Indonesia.

Program Doktor ‘PMRI’ disetujui Menteri Pendidikan berdiri di Unsri sebagai tindak lanjut program sandwich Master (IMPOME- Utrecht-Unsri-Unesa) yang succes selama 5 Tahun. Sampai Tahun 2025 ini sudah meluluskan 25 doktor yang tersebar di Indonesia.
